This workshop is organized in the context of the newly established center on "Multiscale Simulation Methods for Soft Matter Systems", which aims at bringing together two complementary areas, Applied Mathematics and Soft Matter Science, to tackle some of the most fundamental challenges of multiscale modelling. Since women are underrepresented in both fields, the purpose of this workshop is to provide a platform where highly established female scientists and female junior researchers from both fields come together, get to know each other, and discuss their experiences.

Venue

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany

Scope

The summer school is dedicated to elucidate fundamental processes at the solid-liquid interface. The school offers introductory lectures on physico-chemical concepts, electrochemistry and state-of-the-art theoretical approaches. An emphasis will be on scanning force microscopy and related techniques for providing nano-scale insight into structure and processes at the solid-liquid interface.

Local Organizers

Angelika Kühnle, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Stefan Weber, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Rüdiger Berger, Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz ...

General Description:
Understanding the mechanical aspects of materials is important for utilizing materials for any application in industry or academics. Students will be given a general introduction into engineering concepts relevant to the mechanics and rheology of materials, such as stress-strain response of materials, mechanical instability, elasticity and viscoelasticity, viscosity, and flow of materials.

Target Group:
PhD students interesting in learning about aspects of mechanical properties of materials with emphasis on polymers. Students interesting in polymer science, materials science, soft matter, and materials engineering are encouraged to attend.

Speakers:
Dr. Jonathan Pham (Postdoc, MPIP-Mainz): 2 Days
Prof. Bernhard Wolf (Emeritus, University of Mainz): 1 Day
Prof. Christian Friedrich (University of Freiburg): 1 Day

Head: Prof. Holger Frey
Student organizers: Jana Herzberger, Daniel Leibig

Dates and Location:
When: Monday, July 27th - Thursday, July 30th 2015

The goal of the summer school is to bring together scientists working in different areas related to this topic and to promote the exchange of ideas between different research communities. In particular this school aims at bridging hard and soft condensed matter. With this, it tries to achieve a key goal of the Graduate School MAINZ to support activities that involve both hard and soft matter and transport is a key example, where for instance strongly correlated hard matter spin and charge injectors are used in combination of polymers and other soft materials that can exhibit favorable properties such as long spin lifetimes and photo-activity. ...
