Prof. Dieter Jaksch is a theoretical physicist in the field of ultra-cold quantum gases and quantum optics with an outstanding scientific record and a high reputation as an excellent teacher. His seminal publication in Physical Review Letters in 1998 “Cold bosonic atoms in optical lattices” laid the theoretical foundations for the groundbreaking experiments in the group of Nobel laureate Theodor Hänsch and Immanuel Bloch on the realization of the Bose-Hubbard model with ultra-cold quantum gases and the first observation of the Mott-insulator superfluid transition in These systems. This extremely influential work triggered a whole new field of research: the use of ultra-cold gases in optical lattices as model systems for the investigation of many-body models.
