The scientific concept of the Graduate School Materials Science in Mainz (MAINZ) builds on pervasive scientific objectives that provide the basis for a coherent research effort and tie together our research. Our scientific objectives are:
- Reduction of Complexity
- Rational Design of Tailored Materials
- Function-through-Structure
- Engineering Correlations and Interaction Strengths
These objectives allow us to bridge previously disparate fields of research. Thereby, we obtain a common language, foster knowledge transfer, and gain insight into similar phenomena in systems traditionally seen as separate. Research in MAINZ addresses phenomena in materials systems spanning the full spectrum from “hard” to “soft” matter and ranging from model systems to complex bio-related materials. Our scientific concept is implemented in four specific research areas, which are guided by our scientific objectives, and which reflect the specific scientific strengths of our PIs.
